Vaginal yeast infection is the infection of the vagina caused due to a fungus called candida albicans. It is a condition of extreme irritation in the vagina and occurs in most women. In a few cases, it may also be transferred to men after sexual contact with the infected partner. But, it is not a sexually transmitted disease. Candida albicans is a common fungus present in the vagina, mouth, skin, and in the lining of the digestive tract.
In balanced conditions, this fungus does not cause any trouble. But, sometimes due to approving conditions, this fungus multiplies, causing the yeast infection. The conditions that help the fungus multiply are use of antibiotics to treat other problems, being pregnant, being obese and suffering from diabetes. Having too many yeast infections is a sign of some other health issues that a person might be suffering from. An infection that does not get cured with treatment may be a sign of HIV.
Vaginal candidiasis causes itching, irritation, burning of the vagina and swelling of the vulva in some cases. It may also cause pain at the time of urination and intercourse in some women. Unusual cottage cheese like discharge is typical of this yeast infection. The discharge can differ from watery to thick and may not at all be a symptom in some cases. Men do not show any severe symptoms of this infection but in some cases they may develop a rash or a burning sensation in the penis after intercourse done without a condom.
Minor symptoms of vaginal candidiasis can easily be treated at home. For that, you must not be pregnant or have fever. Also, you must not have a chance of any sexually transmitted disease or be suffering from the infection for the first time. You could also use the Yeastrol Yeast Infection Treatment. This is a highly effective oral suspension; it has to be sprayed under the tongue twice or thrice in a day. Otherwise there are other anti- fungal medicines like the clotrimazol, miconazol and the like. Creams containing these are easily available in the market and you do not require a prescription for them.
There is another bacterial infection called the trichomoniasis which has similar symptoms to that of the yeast infection. Therefore, it is not easy to differentiate between the both. In this case, you must seek the opinion of your doctor before undergoing any treatment on your own.
To avoid this infection, it is advised that you not use any fragrant sprays, creams or lotion on the vaginal area. Only cotton underwear is advised as others made of silk or satin may not let the air circulate in this area. Do not wear tight pants as it would cause further irritation. Do not wear your bath suit without washing. Keep a check on your glucose level if you are diabetic.
